United Nations - International Year of Sport and
Physical Education (IYSPE) 2005
Dear Sir/Madam,
On behalf of Mr. Adolf Ogi, Special Adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General
on Sport for Development and Peace and Mr. Michael
Kleiner, Head of Office of the International Year of Sport and Physical
Education (IYSPE) 2005, we take this opportunity to express our most
sincere thanks to you and your organisation for your contribution to making
the IYSPE 2005 such an undeniable success. We thank your organisation
for their support throughout the IYSPE 2005, which has contributed to
the international, national and local framework that has raised awareness
and confirmed the value and importance of sport for development and peace.
To ensure that the momentum continues within each UN member State and
in acknowledgement of what has been accomplished during the IYSPE 2005,
two documents will be produced by the United Nations:
1) Firstly, a report will be presented to the Secretary-General of the
United Nations in early April 2006 in a format suited for transmission
to the General Assembly. This Report will constitute a concise summary
of the years' activities (including a Framework of Action).
2) Secondly, a publication giving a more comprehensive review of the
IYSPE 2005 will focus on contributions to the IYSPE 2005 by providing
examples of sport-related projects and programmes; this publication will
enable the sharing of best practices and will provide the framework from
which the next steps may be taken to ensure the IYSPE 2005 and its contribution
to sport for development and peace remains a lasting legacy.
To enable an inclusive and balanced overview of the IYSPE 2005 for both
the Report to the Secretary-General and the Publication on the IYSPE 2005,
we call for submission of the following:
- One page summary of activities and initiatives undertaken by your
organisation throughout the IYSPE 2005, including:
- A list of events related to the commemoration of the IYSPE2005;
- Expected follow-up initiatives to enable a lasting legacy of
the IYSPE;
- Should your organisation have held any conferences or other special
large-scale events during 2005, please provide us with any outcome document
from these events (e.g. resolutions, calls to action etc.);
- To facilitate a unique and attractive publication, we call for any
quotes, photographs, exceptional initiatives etc. that may appropriately
be used and acknowledged in the publication. We would request that copyright
for the use of such material is transferred to the United Nations for
the use in the IYSPE 2005 Publication;
- Please supply us with a brief description (150 words) of any projects
or programmes which you consider as best reflecting your organisation's
activities during the IYSPE 2005 (for example, an advertising campaign;
training programme; male and female 'Athletes of the Year' for 2005;
a team or individuals who have made an important contribution to the
promotion of sport within your country in 2005; if possible, photos
would be most appreciated to accompany your submission). These examples
will contribute to raising awareness, the sharing of best practices,
and a deeper understanding of the value of sport.
Please kindly complete your submission in the attached template and return
by 31 January 2006 to Ms. Ingrid Beutler: ibeutler@unog.ch and mkleiner@unog.ch;
tel: 0041 (0)22 9172555.
