Southern African Women and Sport Consultative meeting

The Southern African Women and Sport Consultative meeting has decided upon Guding Principles for Sport Sector Addressing Violence Against Women and Girls in Sport.

The Southern African Women and Sport Consultative Meeting was held on 28 th – 29 th April 2011 at the intercontinental Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia under the theme “Violence Against Women in Sport: Stepping Up to the Challenge”.

The meeting was organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child development of Zambia, The National Sports Council of Zambia and the National Organization for Women in Sport Physical Activity and Recreation (NOWSPAR) with the support of the Norwegian Olympic and Paralympics Committees and Confederation of Sport ( NIF).

Representatives of Women Commissions of Sports Councils and Olympic Committees in the following countries were invited: Angola, Botswana, Lesoto, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

The president of WomenSport International was invited as a key note speaker. The title of her speech was: Violence against women in sport – the issues. The First Lady, Ms Thandiwe Banta was a Patron of the event, and participated at the opening of the meeting.
