The Web Page
Our new web side had just been opened when I wrote this report one year ago. It has improved since that time, and the newest development is that we have a Spanish-speakers “Question/Answer” section, and people can now ask questions which are answered in Spanish language. This is facilitated by Zoila Palacio, exercise scientist and coach from Colombia and USA ,WSI Advisory Board and Naydi Nazario, a WSI member from Puerto Rico.

News from the Triad Task Force:
Patricia Sangenis, M.D. (WSI Advisory Board) had previously been appointed to the IOC Medical Commission and has now also been appointed Chair of the Women in Sport Group for the Commission. Dr. Barbara Drinkwater was appointed as a member of the Medical and Scientific Group of the IOC. Concerns relating to the health issues of female athletes can be forwarded to either of them.

The Triad Task Force is also working to put together a Power Point presentation for use by team physicians as a means of educating coaches and athletes about preventing this particular condition.

News from the Sexual Harassment Task Force:
Year 2 of a longitudinal study on the impact of child protection in soccer in England has been completed. Celia Brackenridge Ltd., with a staff of nine researchers, conducted 257 interviews, 24 club case studies and seven surveys to provide data that is informing future policy directions on child protection.

All sport governing bodies funded by the government in England have five years to comply with new National Standards for Child Protection in Sport. To assist them with the recording and management of allegations of abuse in sport, Celia Brackenridge Ltd. is developing a software package –A.B.I.S.S.- Abuse in Sport Statistics. The database from these cases will eventually be used by researchers to analyse risk hot spots for abuse in Sport.

Kari Fasting, in cooperation with Nada Knorre (Czech Olympic Committee), is continuing a major study about Gender Relations in Sport in Czech Republic. The study includes questions on the experiences of sexual harassment by elite and national athletes and sport students.

Prevalence studies of abuse in sport are under design in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. A study of women athlete’s experiences of sexual harassment is also understood to be underway in Japan.

UN-DAW publication: “Women 2000: physical activity, sport, exercise and achievement of women’s development goals.”
Carole Oglesby met with the new DAW Director Carolyn Hannan at the 2003 CSW March meetings. She developed a plan together with her, which was sent to the IWG in April. The plan was accepted and distributed to different potential contributors, with a time schedule.
Carole Oglesby has received contributions and also gathered relevant published research information (review articles, positions statements etc.) herself. She mailed the ‘official plan’, previously agreed upon, to Carolyn Hannan on May 19. We have waited for the formal acceptance from Hannan and have received a positive response just a few days ago. When the first draft has been finished it will be sent to members of IWG and others (see the original plan) for editing, comment and modification. The manuscript will be delivered to UN-DAW by Feb/Mar 2004 according to the original plan (see accompanying reply from Oglesby).
