A MULTI-REGIONAL VOLUNTARY VISITOR PROJECT

This International Visitor Project is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. The group will be in the United States June 3-12, 2002. Ivan Weinstein and Paul Engelstad of the Office of International Visitors are coordinating this project.

BACKGROUND AND PROFESSIONAL OBJECTIVES:

The United States has made a unique effort to include women and girls in sports and recreation at all levels. The results of this effort are perhaps best exemplified by the success of the U.S. women's soccer team. Through legislative instruments, such as Title IX, and activities carried out on the state, local and grass-roots levels, women and girls have enjoyed increased access and support in the world of sports.

This Voluntary Visitor project aims to show the participants how these efforts have evolved in the U.S. Over the course of 10 days, the group will be exposed to the wide variety of programs, activities and research going on in this area. In addition, the sociological, psychological, and health aspects of the issue will be examined.

The project will begin in Atlanta, where plans call for visits to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Georgia's Women's Intersport Network. The group will also travel to Gainesville, Georgia, which was the site of several venues during the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

After Georgia, the project will move on to Washington, DC. Here topics will include the legal and political aspects of women in sports, with a look at the history of Title IX. Meetings will also be arranged with government officials, researchers, NGO leaders, and sports training centers.

The group will complete its itinerary in New York City. One day will be devoted to programs conducted on an international level, as well as programs on the city level in New York. A second day will include a trip to a suburban community on Long Island, where the group will visit the Women's Sports Foundation headquarters, a sports medicine facility, and a local community sports organization.

The participants are leaders in their home countries in the area of increasing access for girls and women to sports and recreation. They are active on the national and international level. The backgrounds of the group members are outlined below, in alphabetical order by country name. All of the participants are fluent in English.
